Baby Emily by Stella Ackroyd
Baby Emily by Stella Ackroyd
A classic DK weight baby cardigan with elegant features and classic styling. Quick to knit, I have taken a basic cardigan shape and modified it to minimise seams and bulk of fabric - just the kind of things which make a garment look over-sized on a little tot.
The back is worked to length to the armhole and then to numbers of row in the armhole to be sure that the button placement falls perfectly on the fronts. Once the body pieces have been worked and joined in a three needle bind-off, the sleeves are picked-up and knit downwards, with a clever shaping technique to make sure the sleeves are wide enough to accommodate mum’s hand when dressing the baby, but there isn’t so much fabric that the baby is swamped. Note: less fabric means fewer stitches to knit (i.e. more speed) and more yarn economy!
Three buttons placed in considered positions mean that baby’s chest keeps warm but there is enough ease to let their other clothes be seen. Instructions are given for the cuff to be worked flat or in the round, thus eliminating the cuff seam which often looks too bulky on a small hooman.
The instructions have been written for even beginner knitters to understand and I know many experienced knitters who will enjoy this modern take on a classic wardrobe staple.
