Traditions Revisited: Modern Estonian Knits by ALEKS BYRD
Growing up in Washington D.C., Aleks Byrd's school would hold international days during which her mother would dress her in the Estonian national costume. It was often 30ºC, and Aleks would be sweating in her woolen skirt and socks and feel she was an involuntary ambassador of Estonian culture.
Back then, she didn’t understand the meaning of her background, but these days Aleks, whose mother is Estonian Canadian and her father American, is proud and thankful. Being Estonian is an important part of her identity and profession which is strongly reflected in her knit designs.
For years Aleks has been diving into the Estonian knitting culture and now her long-awaited book is finally available for presale. Traditions Revisited – Modern Estonian Knitsis an introduction to Estonian knitting, both traditional and traditional-inspired. It includes 19 patterns, ranging from mittens to sweaters, that blend seamlessly with modern knitting styles.
